About the Grant
The Houston-Galveston Area Council and a consortium of community partners received a $3.75 million Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant to develop a regional plan for sustainable development for the 13-County Texas Gulf Coast Planning Region. The Houston Galveston Regional Plan for sustainable development will be a high-level, long-range plan for enhancing the region’s quality of life and economic opportunity for residents. This effort is being led by a partnership of 25 organizations, including H-GAC member governments, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and other partners.
The Regional Plan for Sustainable Development will look at current and future opportunities to meet the needs of the diverse communities and residents of the region in a manner that doesn’t compromise the needs of future generations. The plan will lay out goals for the region, develop metrics to assess sustainability, analyze regional scenarios, and recommend implementation strategies. Plan development will be driven by extensive public engagement, technical advisement and fact-based analysis.

Houston and the surrounding 13-county Texas Gulf Coast Planning Region are at an historic juncture. While the perception may exist that the decision-drivers for this region are solely economic, there is an emerging recognition that this region has the building blocks to be one of the most livable, equitable and sustainable places in the nation.
